If you’re looking for words that mean so many things that they’re hard to use in mixed company, you’d do well to start with “socialism” and “socialist.” To be sure the distortions of presidential campaigns and AM radio do their part to muddy the waters, but there is some genuine and some intense complexity in the history of socialism itself. Gary Dorrien’s recent book American Democratic Socialism from Yale University Press digs into the moments and the people and the movements, particular to the United States, that turn that complexity up, and Christian Humanist Profiles is glad to welcome him to the show.
