“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been fathered by God and knows God. The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” So everyone who’s read the New Testament knows from its witness, yet Christian theology does not always start there when we talk about providence, the strange but compelling ways in which God lives with creation. Thomas Jay Oord wants to correct that, and in his recent book The Uncontrolling Love of God he proposes a theology in which non-coercive love is the starting point, a constant point of reference, and the basis of critique throughout. Tom is here to talk about his book, and I’ll remind our listeners that Tom, who is a generous guy, has given all Christian Humanist listeners a free copy of the audiobook version of this volume, which you can access through the episode’s show notes at this RSS page.
