I’m no film historian, but Todd Pedlar’s quote concerning Bergman not believing in an after-life is probably anachronistic to this movie: Bergman was the son of a pastor, and at the time of the making of this film he reportedly was quite religious — he was even said to be holding sermons on the set of The Seventh Seal.

    In the 60’s he did turn to agnosticism, but later still he professed his belief in an existence after death.
