Christian Humanist Profiles 128: Why Liberalism Failed

Download or Stream this Episode

When a nineteen-year-old college student says that she’s neither a liberal nor a conservative, I never know quite where the conversation will go next.  Will this be one of the elusive “swing voters” who really could take on new principles when the next election rolls around?  A newly minted college libertarian? Someone so tired of cable television news that “apolitical” sounds like a refuge rather than a failure to read Aristotle? On the other hand, when a book says right on the cover that “Liberalism Failed,” I’m readying myself for a screed from a partisan, and honestly I’m bracing myself for the worst.  Happily, Patrick Deneen’s new book Why Liberalism Failed is neither sophomoric nor shrill, and Christian Humanist Profiles is glad to have Dr. Deneen on the show to talk through its main claims.
