Everybody’s excited about the Trinity right now. Sure, it’s a venerable, orthodox doctrine, but it’s also a hot topic, and in a broad range of Christian traditions, too. The modern revival of interest has been with us for a while, of course—since Barth’s Church Dogmatics, certainly—but that interest seems only to have grown over the decades. Like pumpkin spice, the Trinity seems to be in everything—and, as with pumpkin spice, some sober-minded folks think that enthusiasm has led to excess and misguided innovations. Well, as the sage Vizzini once said, when the job goes wrong, go back to the beginning—and theologian Fred Sanders has that same advice. In his book, The Triune God, Sanders labors not so much to break new ground, as to reestablish Trinitarian theology on its original ground: God in three persons, revealed for us and our salvation. In this episode of Christian Humanist Profiles, David Grubbs interviews Dr. Fred Sanders, professor in Biola University’s Torrey Honors Institute and author of The Triune God (Zondervan, 2016).
